NIU STEM Read: Learn the STEM. Live the Book!

Northern Illinois University’s STEM Read ( creates live events and online resources to help students and teachers explore the science, technology, engineering, and math concepts behind popular fiction books. Our standards-aligned activities and live games give students hands-on experiences with STEM, promote collaboration, and foster creative problem-solving skills. They also help students and teachers explore connections between STEM and the arts.


The Learning Technology Center and NIU STEM Read have partnered to host a STEM Read event this summer!


Target Audience: Late Middle School/High School Educators

Location: June 11th – Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby

PD Hours: 6 Hours

Cost: $50 (includes lunch)

Educators, learn how you can use awesome books to create engaging STEAM activities for your classroom.

Experience one of our book-based games. Work in teams to solve hands-on challenges related to the young adult novel Ashfall by Mike Mullin. You’ll explore math and survival, engineering, ethics, and the apocalypse, and more! Learn how we choose books and shape our activities around plot points and STEM concepts. Come away with ideas and free resources to ignite students’ enthusiasm for reading and learning.
