If AI Can Code, Why Should Students Learn Computer Science?
CS is so much more than syntax or writing loops. Here are six reasons to keep CS in the educational conversation right now + how CS prepares students for an AI-powered workforce.
CHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS – The Learning Technology Center (LTC) is proud to announce Isaac Jacquez, a fifth grade student from Scott Elementary in Mannheim CUSD 83, as the winner of its inaugural Illinois State Fair Butter Cow 3D Printing Contest. Isaac’s innovative miniature butter cow design will be reproduced and distributed August 8-10 in the Governor’s Tent at the 2024 Illinois State Fair.
In its first year, the contest invited K-12 students across Illinois to sketch designs and use 3D printing technology programs, such as Tinkercad, SketchUp and Fusion 360, to create 3D images that could be converted into printable files.
At Scott Elementary, teachers partnered with their technology coach to educate students about the history of the State Fair and the significance of the iconic butter cow.
“We would like to extend our gratitude to all participating students and schools, whose enthusiasm and creativity have made the contest a resounding success,” said Mindy Fiscus, Director of Government Affairs at the Learning Technology Center. “We were thrilled to have such a great response from students in our competition’s first year and we are already planning for next year.”
In previous years, LTC staff created 3D homages to this creamy Illinois State Fair mainstay.
This year, says Fiscus, the team wanted to expand the experience by inviting K-12 students from across the state to share their vision for the miniature bovine.
Isaac’s winning design will be celebrated and showcased at the Illinois State Fair. Fairgoers can pick up a ready-made version as a unique keepsake that highlights the innovative potential of Illinois’ young minds.
The Learning Technology Center is an Illinois State Board of Education program that supports all public K-12 districts, schools, and educators through technology initiatives, services, and professional learning opportunities.
