Cut the CRAAP and Embrace Lateral Reading

The CRAAP test was a go-to way to teach web evaluation for years. But do you know its’ origin story? And did you know that “real-life” fact checkers operate in a way that is counterintuitive to the methods we’ve been teaching students? In this session, you will learn about lateral reading, how it is a more effective form of web evaluation, and how you can equip students to be better evaluators of the online content they read.

Learning Objectives

As the result of this session, attendees will be able to:
1. Understand that they ways we used to have students determine web-credibility are now outdated.
2. Utilize the power of lateral reading to determine the credibility of web based content.
