Building the foundation for high quality, effective educational technology integration

More and more districts across the state have begun formalizing their technology integration strategies, both in the near- and long-terms. To support those efforts, we’ve developed a unique technology integration framework that is designed to give educators, administrators, and institutions the structure and scaffolding needed to make technology integration purposeful and meaningful in every classroom.

This framework is versatile and easy to implement, with sections broken down by topic (such as assessment and digital citizenship) and difficulty level (ranging from basic to advanced). The core plan is device- and platform-agnostic as well, meaning that its content is not geared solely toward institutions utilizing certain devices or suites of educational apps and tools.

Foundations for Integrations Technology into the classroom

To support schools and districts as they prioritize purposeful and intentional educational technology experiences in the classroom, we have created the Learning Technology Center developed the Technology Integration Framework to give educators, administrators, and institutions the structure needed to make technology integration purposeful in every classroom.

Assesment

Assessment

Assessments no longer are limited to scantrons and 5-paragraph essays! Think outside the box to assess your students in new and innovative ways.

Apps: Google/Microsoft Forms, Socrative, Quizziz, Kahoot!, Gimkit, etc.

LEVEL 1 ACTIVITIES

Create a digital form to collect information you may have traditionally collected via paper.
Quickly collect information that can be displayed in a spreadsheet.
Use a tool like Plickers to assess students “on the fly” during your class time.

LEVEL 2 ACTIVITIES

Students can use an online assessment tool to receive immediate feedback on their responses.
Students can record their voices in certain tools to demonstrate their learning in a non-traditional way.
Teachers can give assessments to the entire class simultaneously while also having them take place in an online environment.

LEVEL 3 ACTIVITIES

Create a digital form to deliver an assessment. Use branching to direct students to questions based on their answers
Have students record their own screencast presentation instead of presenting live to the class
Students can create their own assessments using an online assessment tool and share them with their classmates.

LEVEL 4 ACTIVITIES

Create a choice menu, giving students multiple choices as to how to demonstrate concept mastery.
Create a lesson with digital assessment built-in (ie Nearpod, Peardeck).
Use an app like goFormative to assign your students asynchronous digital assessments that you can monitor digitally.

Blended Learning

Blended learning may sound scary, but after remote and hybrid learning, there is a good chance you have already tried it and not even realized it! Activities in this section will help you perfect what you started during the pandemic.

LEVEL 1 ACTIVITIES

Teachers understand how to use an LMS
Teachers understand how to utilize video from streaming services to provide content to students.
Students are comfortable using technology in the classroom.

LEVEL 2 ACTIVITIES

Teachers begin to create and share their own video content with their class.
Students are given time in class to explore digital resources curated by the teacher.
Teachers have moved some of their assessments to online platforms.

LEVEL 3 ACTIVITIES

Students are routinely digitizing their work and submitting it through the LMS.
The teacher has created communication channels for the students to use that are technology-based.
Students actively and appropriately engage in collaborative projects involving students virtually and/or in-person.

LEVEL 4 ACTIVITIES

The teacher has created a station rotation environment for students to work through several different learning forms.
The teacher can set up a similar station rotation but allow the students to choose which station and in what order they visit them.
Student self-reflection is built into the station rotation and students choose a learning path based on their reflection and teacher feedback.

Content Creation

Why spend hours combing the Internet for the perfect resource when you (or your students!) can make the resource yourself! Using the activities in this section, you and your students can be your own master content creators.

Apps: Adobe Spark, Canva, Book Creator, Google Sites

LEVEL 1 ACTIVITIES

Create an infographic or poster on a digital platform (Canva, Adobe Spark) instead of on paper/by hand
Use a digital content creator (Canva, Adobe Spark) to make a timeline to supplement curriculum materials
Create images that support learning objectives (memes, descriptions of images)

LEVEL 2 ACTIVITIES

Students can use Book Creator to make a digital book to show mastery of a subject
Use a digital content creator (Canva, Adobe Spark) to make a hyperlinked poster, linking readers to more information about a topic
Have students create an audio presentation (podcast, song, radio drama, etc)

LEVEL 3 ACTIVITIES

Create a digital presentation that embeds multiple media types
Create a website that serves as a digital portfolio (for either a student or the teacher)
Transition content that would have otherwise been in a Google Doc and transition it into a Spark Page of Google Site with images and videos.

LEVEL 4 ACTIVITIES

Use a website editor to make a digital breakout room
Use a website editor to make a webquest for students to complete on their own time/pace
Create a digital working portfolio of all student’s created work for the length of the course.

Data Collection

With so many new tools available for quizzing and data collection, it can be intimidating to get started! Use the activities in this section to start your exploration of these data tools, whether to collect information from your students or play a fun review game at the end of a unit.

LEVEL 1 ACTIVITIES

Create a digital form to collect information you may have traditionally collected via paper.

LEVEL 2 ACTIVITIES

Students can take data collected and utilize spreadsheet functions to organize and display data.
Students can create tables and charts that demonstrate the data collected.
Streamline a classroom process by creating a digital form to help automate your tasks.

LEVEL 3 ACTIVITIES

Students can create public surveys to gauge interest in school activities and issues.
Students can present data used to school or public groups and organizations that can assist in the development of resources.
Students analyze data collected in multiple subject areas (ie, Math and Science).

LEVEL 4 ACTIVITIES

Students create multimedia presentations of data that has been collected. Those presentations can then be shared to online platforms.
Students conduct high-level data collections by partnering with larger businesses or organizations in their communities or beyond.
Students can use external sensors to collect real-world data, turning it into charts and tables to be analyzed as part of a larger assignment or project.

Digital Citizenship

As our students continue to spend more and more of their personal and school time online, it is becoming increasingly important to give them the tools to navigate safely and ethically. Use the activities in this section to help increase your students’ ability to carefully navigate their digital world.

Apps: Common Sense Education, EverFi, Applied Digital Skills, Be Internet Awesome

LEVEL 1 ACTIVITIES

Use Common Sense Education’s Digital Citizenship curriculum (or other packaged curricula)
Use your LMS to assign message board responses for your students for a lesson you would normally do in person. Include positive social interactions in the grading rubric
Teach students the proper way to cite resources found online

LEVEL 2 ACTIVITIES

Schoolwide monthly themes around digital citizenship that are showcased on school websites
Create and display anchor charts (digital or paper) with student-created digital citizenship rules
Students work their way through Google’s Be Internet Awesome game.

LEVEL 3 ACTIVITIES

Create/Engage in Digital Citizenship Challenges via social media with other school districts (sample)
Work with a student committee to create schoolwide digital citizenship guidelines
Teach students how their data is collected online and ways they can protect their online identity

LEVEL 4 ACTIVITIES

Start a student club that focuses on students teaching tips/safety for digital citizenship to other students
Have students create lessons or group activities teaching to teach younger students aspects of digital citizenship
Create student-community videos teaching adults how to display good digital citizenship or practice Internet Safety

Digital Curriculum

With so many different sites offering curriculum support, it can be hard to whittle it down to the perfect site. Activities in this section will help you vet and implement these digital curriculum supports.

Apps: Khan Academy, YouTube, CK12, Podcasts

LEVEL 1 ACTIVITIES

Identify free resources that are available for curriculum building.
Students are given the option to use these resources in support of current content.
Teach students to search Google images via usage rights.

LEVEL 2 ACTIVITIES

Teachers begin to assign videos that support the current curriculum.
Students are provided a list of digital curriculum that supports their learning.
Teachers begin to assign activities that use only digital content.

LEVEL 3 ACTIVITIES

Teachers begin to share full curriculum activities from sites such as CK12 and Khan at more than 60%.
Teachers integrate the digital curriculum with their assessments.
Teachers begin to create their own digital curriculum content.

LEVEL 4 ACTIVITIES

Teachers move to only using digital curriculum and away from hard copied text.
An easy-to-navigate system has been established so students know how to use multiple curriculum platforms in their learning.
Students begin to develop materials for the following year’s class to use as part of their digital curriculum.

Flipped Classroom

Flipping your classroom can sound intimidating, however it can provide your students with unique learning opportunities. Use the activities in this section to get started flipping your lessons and creating space and time for more unique in-classroom opportunities

LEVEL 1 ACTIVITIES

Find a video on Youtube or another streaming service that relates to your curriculum. Assign it to your students for homework.
Find digital text resources that can be accessed by students at their own pace to supplement in-class lectures.
Find podcast resources that can be accessed by students at their own pace to supplement in-class lectures.

LEVEL 2 ACTIVITIES

Using your camera, record yourself lecturing, using your classroom board.
Using screencast software, record yourself lecturing with a PowerPoint or Slide presentation.
Record audio instructions or explanations and embed them into assignments, rubrics, and other content that students can use for guidance during an assignment.

LEVEL 3 ACTIVITIES

Shift the teaching schedule for one class, having students watch lectures for homework while completing hands-on activities during class time
Create short formative assessments to determine student understanding and use this information to make changes to upcoming lessons
Using Jamboard or Padlet, have students share thoughts and questions related to homework content. Encourage students to reply to or answer each other’s posts.

LEVEL 4 ACTIVITIES

Create a library of digital resources and recorded lectures and lessons that students can access at their own pace, when needed.
Assign students to create their own “teach the teacher” type videos, showing themselves teaching a concept from their coursework. Add these videos to your library of digital resources for students.
After reviewing course material at home, have students work in groups to create multimedia resources (Canva, Adobe Spark, Prezi) for course concepts. Use these graphics as part of your digital resources for students.

Presentations

With all the amazing presentation tools available, there’s no excuse to have boring presentations anymore! Using the activities in this section, take your presentations and class lectures to the next level by adding interactive content and formative assessments.

Apps: PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi, Pear Deck, Nearpod, EdPuzzle, PlayPosit

LEVEL 1 ACTIVITIES

Create a presentation in PowerPoint or Google Slides
Create a presentation in Nearpod (or upload a presentation from Google Slides or PowerPoint)
Have students make a simple digital presentation using a site like Flipgrid

LEVEL 2 ACTIVITIES

Create a presentation incorporating multimedia, such as videos, sound clips, and other graphics to enhance your lesson content
Create a presentation or lesson for students to access at their own pace
Using the camera or a screen recorder, record a presentation for students to view later

LEVEL 3 ACTIVITIES

Create a lesson in PearDeck or Nearpod incorporating student monitoring questions. Use answers from these questions to direct the course of the lesson.
Create a video lesson with opportunities for student monitoring and feedback in Edpuzzle or Playposit.
Create a Sketchnote style video to present on a topic

LEVEL 4 ACTIVITIES

Students should create an interactive lesson they can teach their peers. Use the lessons to create a library of student-created content.
Use PowerPoint Live to present a slide deck, collecting student data in real-time, and using live closed captioning or translations
Use Prezi or another online tool to integrate your live video with your slide deck during an online presentation or meeting.

Research

One of the best digital citizenship tools we can give our students is the ability to carefully judge and vet the resources they are using. Whether for an academic paper or just to post on social media, research skills are key to these student’s ability to navigate the world around them. Use the activities in this section to help increase your students’ ability to properly vet quality research and sources.

LEVEL 1 ACTIVITIES

Elementary School
Students research online about an animal from a specific habitat.
Middle School
Students read various articles online about the Egyptian pharaohs and their accomplishments.
High School
Cite source information into a Google Doc.

LEVEL 2 ACTIVITIES

Elementary School
Students work collaboratively on a Jamboard with other students with different animals from the same habitat to conduct their research findings.
Middle School
Students choose an Egyptian pharaoh and work in groups on a shared Google Doc to conduct research on their chosen pharaoh and their accomplishments and present their findings to the class.
High School
Using Google Explore within a Google Doc create a works cited page.

LEVEL 3 ACTIVITIES

Elementary School
Students will collaborate with other students with animals from the same habitat and combine their individual research in Google Slides. Students will share their Google presentation with the teacher, and with the other students in the class on the similarities of animals from the same habitat.
Middle School
Students put their presentations on a blog or online classroom to write learning reflections, post comments, and discuss peer learning.
High School
Share the works cited page with the instructor or other students if working in collaborative groups for teacher or peer review.

LEVEL 4 ACTIVITIES

Elementary School
Students will take a virtual tour/ field trip to a Zoo to learn and record the similarities of animals that live in the same habitat. Students will create a Google Site that represents each animal including a page that describes the similarities based on habitat. The slides then will be shared with a local Zoo or Professor for feedback.
Middle School
Students use video conferencing to meet live with a science museum director to compare/contrast Egyptain pharaohs and their accomplishments. Before the video conferencing call, students will use Google Earth to research various Egyptian pharaohs’ tombs and make connections through compare and contrast.
High School
Collaborate and share a works cited page with another class that is in another school and have the students from another class peer review the sources and defend why, on a Google Doc, the sources are good/ reliable/valid choices on the topic.

Resource Collection

This Internet is massive and constantly growing. It can be hard keep all of the resources and tools you find organized and easily accessible. Use the activities in this section to curate, collaborate, and create new things with your resource collections.

LEVEL 1 ACTIVITIES

Curate a collection of articles around a research topic.
Create a parent newsletter.
Create a collection of websites you want to refer back to.

LEVEL 2 ACTIVITIES

Create a portfolio for your work.
Curate a collection of articles, videos, images, Google Maps, Spotify playlists, Instagram photos, tweets, etc. around a topic
Share your collection outside of the school district.

LEVEL 3 ACTIVITIES

Invite collaborators to a Wakelet and work on the curation with others.
Produce a collaborative hyperdoc (using Google Docs or Microsoft OneNote) of resources for a particular topic.
Have students work collaboratively across classrooms or grade levels to curate resources tied around topics to share with peers.

LEVEL 4 ACTIVITIES

Publicly publish a portfolio of work for others to benefit from.
Students create a portfolio of work to become part of a collaborative student resource library.
Create lists for parents of resources that can support the curriculum. Publicly post this list on a school or classroom website and regularly update it with new and relevant links.

Screencasting & Recording

One of the best tools to facilitate remote or hybrid learning is screen recording! Use the activities in this section to expand your screencasting abilities, from recording basic lectures to creating student-driven content.

LEVEL 1 ACTIVITIES

Students can record a presentation to share with their class.
Students can explain an artifact of learning.
Students can record their responses to an exit ticket question.

LEVEL 2 ACTIVITIES

Students can demonstrate their reading fluency by recording themselves reading a passage and submitting it to the teacher.
Students can differentiate their videos by adding closed captions to their Google Slides presentations.
Students can record themselves asking specific questions on topics and share the video with the teacher.

LEVEL 3 ACTIVITIES

Students can track their progress of learning by creating multiple screencasts over a period of time and housing them in a Slides presentation.
Students can use version history to reflect on how their Google Doc assignment changed over time, being sure to focus on why they made the adjustments they did.
Students can share authentic feedback in a peer review by recording a screencast of the student’s work and linking it to comment in the shared work.

LEVEL 4 ACTIVITIES

Students can create helpful walk-throughs of commonly used programs the school is using to share with fellow students, teachers, and parents.
Students record mini-lessons to explain a concept that can be shared with other students for concept support.
Students conduct and record video interviews with experts or community members to provide real-world information about topics of study.

Video Creation

Video can be a great alternative to traditional presentations or written assignments and reports. Use the activities in this section to add some creativity to your lectures and student projects.

Apps: Flipgrid, WeVideo, Animoto, Adobe Spark

LEVEL 1 ACTIVITIES

Use a search engine to search for photos or videos related to a lesson, instead of an encyclopedia or textbook.
Use Google Drive, OneDrive, or DropBox to store and sort collections of photos and videos
Use Google Slides, PowerPoint, or Animoto to create a photo slideshow.

LEVEL 2 ACTIVITIES

Students can collaborate on a shared video project in WeVideo, where the teacher can provide feedback in real time.
Create a Flipgrid topic where students can discuss a prompt virtually or create a screencast showing their work. Allow students to reply to each other and teachers should leave students video feedback.
Use Giphy or another .gif creator to create custom gifs for you to use on virtual student work instead of stickers.

LEVEL 3 ACTIVITIES

Create a video “virtual field trip” in the video editor of your choice, using green screen technology.
Partner with another classroom, outside of your school on a Flipgrid topic. Encourage students to leave reply videos.
Coach students in creating example/demo videos for complex topics. House these videos in one central location, such as a YouTube channel for access by other students.

LEVEL 4 ACTIVITIES

Create a FlipGrid lesson and share it to the community DiscoLibrary.
Create a WeVideo template for others in your school/district community to use.
In partnership with your school/district’s communications director, create a student-led video highlighting a project or initiative your students are proud of. Share this video on social media.

Share this post
